Bausch & Lomb Company is an American international medical technology company that was founded in Rochester, New York, in 1853. The company was established by three recent immigrants to the United States who specialized in the manufacture of anterior segment ophthalmic equipment and eye care products. Over the next 150 years, Bausch + Lomb grew through a combination of internal expansion and strategic mergers and acquisitions. It has made numerous corporate acquisitions over the past two decades; following its 1993 merger with Shearson Lehman Brothers, Bausch + Lomb acquired Del Laboratories (1995), Berlex (1996), ICN Pharmaceuticals (1999), Apex Medical Corporation (2003) and OSI Eyetech (2007). In June 2007 it acquired Tane - a privately held Italian company that specialized in the development and manufacturing of contact lenses - for $430 million.
