Burlington Northern Santa Fe Company is one of the worlds largest transportation & logistics companies. It provides rail, intermodal and rail-to-truck transload services in addition to supply chain management services.
It was formed in September 1996 by the merger of Burlington Northern Inc which was formerly known as Burlington Northern Railroad, Burlington Resources Inc which owned Santa Fe Pacific Gold Corp & merged with Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway Co that same year. Headquartered in Fort Worth Texas it employs 32000 employees at present while its revenues are 9 billion US dollars according to their website which also states that they operate on 32000 route miles across 21 states on 3 continents linking to Canada's vast resources & markets throughout Mexico, the Caribbean & Central America.
The company also has a freight forwarding subsidiary known as BNSF Logistics that provides inter modal & rail-truck transload services in over 2 dozen US states & Mexico. In 2009, BSNF acquired the Illinois Central Railroad which added approximately 1300 route miles to its network while adding 4500 employees at present. Now it also offers other transportation related activities such as ship agency, steamship line, terminal & water carrier services through another subsidiary called Northern Way Freight whose primary function is to provide steamship lines, container leasing and liner service plus international seaway cargo handling for their customers through Port of Los Angeles & Port of Long Beach.
