The history of Ciena dates back to 1986 when it was founded by Leonard Bosack who worked at Stanford University. Initially, the company focused on optical systems for telephone exchange switches. From 1992 till 1995 Ciena grew from 50 to 500 employees thanks to Venture Capital investments which were provided by Norwest Venture Partners and New Enterprise Associates. As a result, the customers got new products developed with the help of 6 patents that were registered in 1995.
In 1996 Ciena merged with Cascade Communications and the company got a new name: Ciena Corp.
In 1999, just in 5 years, David Schaeffer became the CEO of the company. As a result of this change, he launched two rounds of funding for $280 million.
Recently Ciena acquired Quantenna to further develop its services for carriers and enterprises such as video analytics and dynamic spectrum management. Nowadays, many television operators rely on Ciena's solutions to improve their broadband internet services.
