Colgate-Palmolive Company is a leading global consumer products company that manufactures oral, personal and household care, and pet nutrition products.
The company was founded in 1806 by Samuel Colgate, later becoming known as 'Colgate & Company'. In 1882 the company introduced its first Colgate Toothpaste. The following year, the company's name became 'Colgate & Company' after William Colgate - also an American entrepreneur - set up his own starch, soap and candle business in New York City.
William never actually worked for or had any connection with the company prior to it being renamed. For many years Colgate remained a partnership until it incorporated in 1928.
Over the years, Colgate has created several brands. These include Colgate, Palmolive, Hill's Science Diet, Hill's Prescription Diet, Hills Pet Nutrition and more.
