Comcast is the largest cable company in the United States serving over 22.5 million customers. The company's subsidiary, Comcast Cable , provides cable television, internet, phone service to residential and business customers in 40 states and the District of Columbia.
Founded in 1963 as American Cable Systems by Ralph Roberts, the company was renamed Comcast Corporation on December 7th, 1972 and began trading on the NASDAQ stock exchange under CCStk . Since then they have acquired multiple companies such as AT&T Broadband (2001), MediaOne Group (2003) and NBCUniversal (2011).
Growth & Expansion: In 2006 Comcast announced it had entered into an agreement to acquire a majority interest in the media company NBCUniversal , which was finalized in January 2011. Since the acquisition Comcast has attempted to grow their customer base with plans for, "expansion of high-speed Internet access across the U.S., deployment of integrated wireless and Wi-Fi services nationwide and expansion of its network to serve markets beyond currently served areas"
Comcast also offers numerous television channels, including local news stations, national broadcast networks such as Fox News Channel, The Weather Channel, MSNBC, E! Channel, USA Network. ESPN, Bravo, A&E Networks (including History and Lifetime), Syfy Network, TBS , TNT and Disney -owned channels such as ABC Family (becoming a joint venture with 21st Century Fox in 1996), Disney Channel, Disney Junior, ESPN and Radio Disney.
