H&R Block is a tax preparation company that provides services in over 12,000 locations across the United States. The company also operates overseas, with operations throughout Europe and Australia. From their founding in 1955 to 2003, H&R Block was headquartered in Kansas City, Missouri - where it still has its operational headquarters. However, its headquarters are now located in New York City.
H&R Block was founded by brothers Henry W. Bloch and Richard Bloch on February 23rd, 1955. It began when the pair purchased a one-room accounting firm that catered to low-income taxpayers. With an investment of $5000 each from their parents, they set up shop as Henry W. Bloch Associates - later changing the name to H&R Block after it became a corporation in 1958. The company focused on filing tax returns for low-income families, offering to do their taxes for free if the return was accepted. Over the years, the Bloch brothers took their business from Kansas City to other locations across the country, establishing an office wherever they saw a need. In 1970 they purchased a building in Kansas City and opened 12 offices in its vicinity.
In 2003, H&R Block went through a massive rebranding process - changing both its logo and overall theme . It also changed its focus from serving middle-class citizens to catering exclusively to upper-middle class Americans.
