Jones Apparel Group company is an American fashion retailer that manufactures, markets and distributes women's dresses, suits, sportswear, shoes and accessories. The company operates over 7,000 stores under multiple brand names worldwide.
It was founded in Dothan, Alabama by David R. Jones Sr., who had previously worked for his father's clothing manufacturing business before deciding to go into business on his own with a loan of $5,000 at the age of 18 years old. His first success was selling army surplus goods after World War II; later he expanded into retailing. Four years after founding the company David R. Jones Sr.'s son David M. Jones joined the company as his father's partner and together they turned it into a multi-million dollar business with over 25 stores across the southern United States.
In 1972, David M. Jones took control of the company and began to diversify its products line by adding sportswear and casual wear to the product range. In 1980, Jones Apparel Group went public on the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) under the symbol JNY.
