Maxtor is a computer hardware company that provides storage solutions and services for both consumers and businesses.
Maxtor was established over 30 years ago, in 1982. A few years later in 1985 they released the first ever 10MB hard drive with an external SCSI interface. This made them one of the top hard drive brands of its time.
In 2006 Maxtor was acquired by Seagate Technology for 1.9 billion US dollars in what was called at the time "the largest strategic acquisition in Seagate's history." In 2012, after a series of restructurings, layoffs and cost cutting measures, Seagate shut down Maxtor for good.
Today, Maxtor exists only as a brand of Seagate and no longer manufactures or sells its own storage devices. The company provides services such as data recovery and bare drive refurbs, though the latter is only available upon request and must be sent to one of their facilities.
Maxtor continues to provide hardware support for both their legacy product lines and those manufactured by Seagate Technology post-acquisition. Their refurbished products can be purchased through Seagate's online store and other retailers.
