Newmont is one of the world's largest gold mining companies and has been in business for over 100 years. It was originally known as the New York Mining and Stock Exchange, and it changed its name to Newmont Mining Corporation in 1921. Newmont is headquartered in Colorado and had more than 18,000 employees at the end of 2016.

Named after a director named Kenneth Downs (who later became president), Newmont started out as a small company with only 30 employees that mined copper and silver. At that time, its goal was to become an open-pit copper mine in Randsburg, CA. That mission failed because of money issues so they switched their focus from being a mining company to a gold producer in 1916 when they bought a group of mines in Tonopah, NV.

Since then, Newmont has drastically expanded its operations throughout the world. It now owns several gold mining properties around the world, including Batu Hijau mine on the island of Sumbawa off west Nusa Tenggara in Indonesia.
