Nvidia is the largest company dedicated to building graphics processing units (GPUs) and licensable semiconductor intellectual property. Nvidia supplies processors for computer gaming as well as graphic cards which are used by gamers all over the world, 5 out of 6 people who play 3D games use Nvidia GPUs.
Nvidia also supplies display drivers for LCD monitors and laptops built by other companies, such as Apple and Dell.
The company was founded in 1993 with a focus on creating 3D graphics capabilities, including some of the standard graphics libraries, such as OpenGL and Direct3D. Companies such as Autodesk, Electronic Arts and Avid created software that could take advantage of Nvidia's development tools workstation computers based around CPUs from Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) and Intel, along with Nvidia's own specialized graphics hardware.
