Payless ShoeSource is an American company that offers discounted shoes for adults and kids. As of 2016, they have 3,900 shops in more than 30 countries on five continents. The first store was opened in Topeka, Kansas in 1956 by four brothers named Syed Abbas. They later changed their name to 'Pay Less' to reflect the discount prices they were offering customers. In 1963, a second shop was opened in Downtown Omaha under the direction of CEO Paul Jones from 1983 until his retirement in 2002. Their headquarters are now located outside of Columbus, Ohio at Suburban Collection Showplace which makes it easier for them to work with sister companies such as Ace Hardware and TJ Maxx.
The company started out selling shoes only but has since expanded to offering accessories, handbags, socks, jewelry, beauty products and legwear. Customers are not required to sign up for a membership in order to buy at Payless ShoeSource though they can if they wish to receive exclusive deals and discounts. The company has spent the past several years refitting all of their stores with new fixtures that include interactive screens where customers can watch shoe tutorials or participate in contests. They also offer design services where customers can come into one of their shops to have custom colors mixed for their purchase so it is exactly the color they were hoping for.
