Pep Boys Auto Parts and Service is a U.S. automotive retail and service chain with over 8,500 stores in 40 states throughout the United States. Pep Boys also operates more than 500 franchised tire and automotive centers in 36 countries, selling products from manufacturers such as Goodyear, Bridgestone, Federal Mogul, Pirelli & C. S.p.A., General Tire, Hankook Tire Co., Ltd., Titan Tire Corporation, Toyo Tire & Rubber Company Ltd., NAPA AUTO PARTS®, Carlisle Tires Plus™, Centric Premium® Brake Products and Wagner® OEX®.
Pep Boys was founded in 1921 by three partners with an initial investment of $600: Emanuel "Manny" Rosenfeld, Maurice "Moe" Strauss and Pat Lyons. Their first store was in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania at 63rd and Market Streets with a mezzanine where Manny lived. In 1923 the company moved to a location on Torresdale Avenue near Frankford Avenue in Northeast Philadelphia. The original logo was a simple red oval that said Pep Boys - Service With A Smile! By 1924, there were four stores that had been opened by its now five partners with an additional partner joining the group later that year.
