Trinity Industries, Inc. is an American conglomerate based in Dallas, Texas. The company was founded by Forrest and Gene L. Lawrence in August 1969 as Trinity Steel Company, a pipe distributor for the oil industry. It changed its name to Trinity Industries in 1978. With over 50 businesses under its umbrella, Trinity's primary business was steel until 1999 when it purchased road-construction equipment manufacturer Ryobi Group Ltd for $1 billion USD (in Japan) at the height of the "dot com" bubble; it sold all of Ryobi's public entities between 2005 and 2008. Through subsidiaries including Trinity Rail Group LLC & Triman Fleet Solutions LLC, they are engaged mainly in manufacturing transportation products such as railroad boxcars and tanker cars through subsidiary Trinity Industries Inc Rail Group LLC, and the North American production of highway guard rails, utility structures for wind turbines, and steel joists.
