Vulcan Materials company is an American corporation dedicated to the mining, processing and marketing of construction materials. Founded in 1916 by Vulcan Atticus Schneider Sr. (grandfather of automobile mogul Carroll Shelby), the company was originally known as Vulcan Crushed Stone, Inc., but changed its name to "Vulcan Materials Company" in 1969.
Headquartered in Birmingham, Alabama; it claims itself to be the nation's largest producer of construction aggregates - sand, gravel, and crushed stone - for concrete and other construction applications. The company operates approximately 300 quarries along with 1,275 miles of rail lines to transport materials in 13 states including Arizona, California, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas Maryland. Oklahoma & Virginia plus it also has a presence in Northern Ontario.
