Western Digital company is a multinational storage device manufacturing company headquartered in the city of Irvine, California, United States. It was founded in 1970 by an engineer named Juergen Peter. The original name of the company was General Digital Corporation.

The name 'Western Digital' came from one of its earliest products - a hard disk drive for IBM computers. At first Western Digital manufactured only hard disk drives but eventually diversified into other related products such as memory modules, interfaces for external data storage devices etc., Each new product required development of custom integrated circuits to ensure compatibility with existing ones and thus further complicated production process.
